Tummy tuck
(Abdominoplasty)
“I am over the moon with the results of my procedure ”
Why a tummy tuck might be right for you
If you have loose or excess skin on your tummy which is causing you physical or emotional distress, you may benefit from a tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty). This procedure involves removing the excess skin and fat and tightening your abdominal muscles resulting in an improved abdominal contour.
Tummy tuck surgery is usually for patients who have lost a lot of weight or following pregnancy, as the skin doesn’t always shrink back, and the muscles can become separated after multiple pregnancies; it can also remove stretch marks and scars from previous surgery or injury.
If you are uncomfortable or feel self-conscious about the appearance of your tummy, a tummy tuck will give you a firmer and better shaped abdomen.
Most people who have a successful tummy tuck feel more comfortable with their appearance, can wear better fitting clothes, and feel more confident in their personal and sexual relationships.

Abdominoplasty FAQ’s
We have listed the most commonly asked questions about Abdominoplasty here. If you don’t see what you are looking for or want more information, bring all questions and concerns to your consultation appointment.
-
We may give you appropriate garments if required depending on the specific procedure. While many patients find this re-assuring, we advise you to use your own supportive clothing/wears if you find them more comfortable for you.
-
Most patients needing a tummy tuck may benefit from liposuction to improve the flank fullness (love handles) beyond the skin removal site and the areas beyond such as pubic hair region, such as the flanks or the upper abdomen.
Liposuction enhances the overall result when required, we will examine you and advise appropriately during your consultation.
-
A liposuction only procedure tends not to achieve desired results due to it only removing a fraction of the fat and it does not address the loose skin and may in fact make it worse. The results of liposuction only procedure on the abdomen rarely match expectations and is likely to leave most people disappointed with the outcome.
-
Most sport can be resumed after four weeks. If the sports involves strenuous upper body movements – for example aerobics, running, golf, swimming, and any racquet sports – then it is advisable not to return to these activities until about 6 weeks after surgery. Remember to start lightly and build up gently. You can usually swim after 6 weeks so long as all wounds have fully healed.
-
Muscle tightening is an integral part of abdominoplasty if this is required. Most people who have had multiple pregnancies often have separation of the rectus muscles and this is often confirmed during the operation and the tightening procedure done at the same time. If your examination also shows that you have significant bulge when you try to sit up, then you will also require muscle tightening. What applies to you will be confirmed at your examination and during your operation and we will inform you appropriately. They usually don’t separate again once tightened.

We treat each patient as an individual, we customise our advice to fit with your own circumstances. Ideally you will need to be as close to a healthy BMI as possible to reduce the risk of complications and ensure a quicker recovery. It is more important for you to be at your stable BMI rather than lose weight and then gain it after surgery as this may negatively impact your cosmetic result. If your starting BMI is high, we will give you a reasonable and achievable target to optimise your result and further reduce the risk of complications. It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is not primarily a procedure to help you lose weight, nor will it stop you gaining weight in the future.
-
Guide price of £7250 - £8500 depending on your individual requirements and the hospital where you have the procedure.
-
We do not routinely use drains for your surgery since there is no convincing evidence about their efficacy. Very rarely if the need arises intraoperatively, we may use drains if we consider it to be required. Post operative fluid accumulation (seroma) usually settles over a few weeks with aspirations in clinic if needed.
-
Shaving or waxing is not a necessary requirement before your surgery, if your preference is to be shaved/waxed then we advise you to do this at least 48 hours before the surgery.
-
The procedure typically takes about 3 hours and is done under general anaesthetic as an inpatient with a 1-to-2-night stay in hospital. Your wounds will be closed with absorbable sutures with a skin glue to enable you to shower within a few days after surgery. You will have an outpatient wound to check 7-10 days after surgery with a follow up consultant review 3 to 4 weeks post operatively.
-
Following your surgery, most people can normally drive between 2-3 weeks although you must ensure that you able to comfortably control your vehicle and can-do emergency stops. If you are not sure, wait until you feel ready and safe to drive.
-
• Operation time: 2 - 3 hours
• Anaesthesia type: General (asleep)
• Length of admission: 1 - 3 days
• Recovery: 2 - 4 weeks
-
• Analgesics (for pain control)
• Garments (for comfort and support)
• Dressing check: 10 - 14 days
• Recovery & work: 3 - 4 weeks
-
In our practice, a tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthetic, and takes two to three hours. Dressings are left for 10 - 14 days and a compression garment may be suggested for up to three-weeks.
There are different types of tummy tuck methods, and after examining you, we’ll explain the appropriate ones based on your specific needs.
-
This involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal wall (between the pubic area and the umbilicus). The skin of the abdominal wall is then drawn down to suture it to just above the pubic level. You’ll then have a curved scar across the lower part of your abdomen at the level of the pubic hair and a smaller scar around your belly button. We repair hernia and any separation of the central abdominal muscles.
-
Surplus skin below the umbilicus is removed, leaving you with a smaller scar at the level of the pubic hair, because the umbilicus is not moved, only a limited amount of tissue can be removed.
-
Surplus skin and fat of the loins and back are removed, so that the scar extends around the flanks and onto your lower back.
-
We combine the standard abdominoplasty with a further transverse tissue excision to tighten your abdomen. It’s a more complex surgery and is indicated in those patients with a lot of vertical skin excess / folds. This leaves a scar with a transverse and midline component. Complications are slightly more prevalent with this method.
-
Ideal patients for the tummy tuck include individuals who are a normal weight, in good general health, have realistic expectations, and are looking to improve pockets of fat or loose skin that have not responded to a healthy diet or exercise.
-
Patient satisfaction rate is relatively high with tummy tuck, however the level of satisfaction depends on a number of factors, particularly having a realistic expectation of what surgery can achieve. The greater the amount of excised tissue, the better the overall improvement. Smaller and slimmer patients will generally achieve a better shape following surgery. Swelling above the scar is normal and will settle within a few months.
-
Complications do occur in 8-12% of patients after this operation, although mostly minor, approximately 5-8% if patients may require revision surgery to further improve their result.
• Wound infection may occur but often settles with antibiotics prescription.
• Delayed wound healing can take more than four-weeks to heal.
• Fluid collection above the scar (seroma / haematoma) is not uncommon and is usually treated by repeated aspirations until it settles.
• Skin and fat necrosis may manifest as delayed healing and could require additional surgery to speed the healing process.
• Prominent (hypertrophic) scars occur in around 5% of patients, and wound healing and scar quality varies between individuals.
• Numbness of the abdomen is usually temporary but could be permanent.
• Belly button loss is a possible but fortunately a rare occurrence (<1%).
• Residual excess flank skin ('dog ears') or prominent side and central bulges may later require minor revision surgery or liposuction.
• Over / under correction is a subjective judgement and is often largely dependent on the patient’s expectation.
• Recurrence of tissue excess may occur over months or years, especially following weight changes or pregnancy.
• Asymmetry including displacement of the umbilicus to one side maybe seen and if significant, can be improved with remedial surgery.
• Anaesthetic complications are rare but the Anaesthetist will discuss these with you.
• The above are the more common complications but the list is not exhaustive. We’ll happily address further questions you may have.
