General Information

Breast reconstruction is intended to restore your confidence and appearance following surgery from breast cancer, or to correct a deformity due to developmental or acquired causes. The majority of patients who have mastectomy choose to undergo breast reconstruction, either at the time of their initial surgery (immediate) or afterwards (delayed). The aim is to match the remaining breast as closely as possible to achieve a better look - particularly in patients with large or droopy breasts.

There are several different ways your breast reconstruction can be accomplished:

  • Breast implants and expanders

  • Extended latissimus dorsi flap - using back muscle, fat and skin

  • Pedicled or free abdominal - using fat and skin from thigh or buttock flaps

  • Lipofilling - fat transfer from elsewhere to the breast (often adjunct)

  • Therapeutic mammoplasty - reduction / adjustment of the breast volume with local cancer removal when feasible.
