What Are Inverted Nipples?

Inverted nipples are a medical condition where the entire nipple points inwards, instead of out. It can happen in one or both nipples and is common among both men and women. It’s also possible for nipple retraction to be a concern, where only part of the nipple turns in.

In the vast majority of cases, inverted nipples are not a cause for medical concern, but the aesthetics of the issue can affect confidence levels and self-esteem, which is why people consider having surgery to correct the problem.

It’s also important to note, however, that if your inverted nipples have only just manifested themselves, it could be a symptom of something more serious, such as breast cancer. It could also be symptomatic of duct ectasia, fibrocystic breast disease, scarring or mastitis. If your nipples have only recently become inverted, we would advise you to seek advice from your GP in the first instance.

The condition is often congenital, which means that nipples have been inverted since birth. It’s possible that it happens because milk ducts fail to fully develop, or the base of the nipple doesn’t grow significantly in the womb.

There are various ways to treat inverted nipples, such as by using a breast shield, which can potentially draw the nipple outward once again. Suction devices, meanwhile, can also help to correct the look of the nipple, however this often proves unsuccessful for most people.

However, surgery is also an option that many consider, with surgeons able to tailor the procedure to suit each individual patient to ensure they’re happy with the end result. A consultation will give you time to discuss what you want to achieve, as well as review a portfolio of past patients so you can gain a better idea of what to expect from the procedure.
